ON Riov Tajrok stepped off the transporter pad, aboard the ch'Starfire, or more appropriately, what used to be the warbird ch'Starfire. The Firebat-class warship which was one of the transitional designs between the Klingon-designed D-7 warbird and the D'Deridex-class ship, was now being used as a power plant for the colony. It also served as offices and a private residence for the governor. The ch'Starfire was over three-times the size of a D-7-class warbird. It had only seen short-time service to the Empire before being declared Lost In Action. In the Federation year 2348, just two months after being commissioned, the warbird was dispatched to quell an uprising on the Heagh colony. Just before they arrived, they were drawn into an unstable wormhole and dumped into the middle of an area of space controlled by the Enclave. Tne Enclave ships proved more than a match for the already-crippled warbird, and inflicted major damage. The ship barely escaped and had made a crash landing on the planet. Though the warbird was no longer space-worthy, the Rihannsu crew utilized its complement of attack-shuttles to set up a defensive perimeter around the planet. The ship, though never again to see space flight was used to power the colony. ch'Starfire now sits on mighty pedestals above the colony's only city. Walking through thecorridors of the once-warbird, Tajrok passed what was at once time the general mess hall. It was now an elegant dinig room. Tajrok just shook his head. He made his way to what used to be the senior officer's mess. It was now the governor's private dining room, and was even more elegant than the dining hall. T'Maekh had certainly become the atypical politician. "Riov," called out a young woman. "Please come in and have a seat. Governor T'Maekh will be right with you." The woman showed Tajrok to a seat already prepared for him at the table. She poured him a glass of (what appeared to be) lehe'jhme wine. "If there is anything else I can get you, Rekkhai, please let me know." Tajrok nodded and took his seat. He pulled the wine glass to his nose and took a sniff. It had an excellent aroma to it. He wondered what was keeping T'Maekh, ans started to feel slightly foolish being the only one in the room. That's probably just what T'Maekh wanted. It was another ten minutes before T'Maekh came into the room. "Riov Tajrok," T'Maekh started as he walked through the doorway. "I am so sorry to keep you waiting, but you know how it is... Colony business and whatnot... but, I'm sure you don't want to hear the details." "No, I surely do not," Tajrok commented. He tried not to show his disdain for the governor, looking as big and bloated as his ego as he sweptin into the room. He was also fairly certain T'Maekh was anything but sorry. The governor sat down at the head of the table. THe young woman who had shown Tajrok in, hustled in, tending to the governor's needs. All this was viewed with a raised eyebrow by the Ourai'Sienov's commander. "Your hfai hfehan?" Tajrok questioned when the girl moved away from the table. "Ie," T'Maekh answered easily. Tajrok was both heartened and disheartened by this. It was good to see that Rihannsu traditions were still followed on the colony, but when was it decided which crewmembers of the Starfire would become the servant class. He watched T'Maekh attack a piece of pastry as if it would be the last time he would get to eat anything. "So, what is it you wanted to speak to me about?" Tajrok asked. "The Starzen," T'Maekh told him. There were flecks of the pastry on his chin. "What about them?" "What do you suppose the Athena would be wanting from that backwards race?" "That is what I am asking you," T'Maekh asked, taking a drink from his wine glass. As he set it down the young girl husteled in with a covered plate, which she set in front of T'Maekh. She pulled the covering off to reveal a steaming meal. She then went and fetched a second one for Tajrok. "Surely Erei'Riov Ronov discussed their plans with you. YOu ARE his superior officer, after all." "I may be the superior officer," Tajrok commented dryly, "but, due to his time in this area, Ronov is still got the sector command." "Ahhh, pity," T'Maekh said in such a manner that Tajrok felt it a direct put-down to him."I am sure once yout warbird is repaired, that will change." "I am sure," Tajrok acknowledged. "You know," T'Maekh started. He grabbed a chunk of bread and spread the buttler over it and took a bite. With his mouth full, he continued, "with that warbird of yours, here, we can make the Empire's might be felt out here." to be continued... |
