1927 - "Outcasts In the Corner of the Universe," by Capt. Hunter
by: Maxwell Richards

SNIP:

He gave a slight nod as he peeled off the surgical gown and gloves, carefully depositing them in the disposal unit.  "She'll live.  Her chest cavity was a mess of damaged organs.  Both lungs collapsed, and she had a ruptured spleen.  We managed to repair the damage, but blood loss has left her in a coma.  I didn't want to attempt to wake her as it will be more advantageous to her recovery if we allow the body to wake up naturally."

      Mallory nodded.  "Long term prognosis??"

The EMH shrugged.  "We'll be doing routine EEG's to monitor brain function.  It's a game of wait and see Admiral."

Quen nodded, fighting back emotion.  "Keep me posted Doctor."

ON:

It had been three months since the attack.  In that time, they'd discovered that Columbia's main drive was a hopeless pile of junk.  All they had was a few thrusters to help change direction.  Impulse power was online, but they needed to conserve the fusion generators for life support.

Communications had been impossible as the massive main drive explosions had exacerbated the natural distortion of the region.

So Columbia had drifted......until she'd fallen into a system with a 'dirty' G2-Type yellow dwarf.  Following along with her had been the surviving Orion ship......equally disabled.  Both vessels had managed to reach the orbit of the only inhabitable planet in the system.

The star system itself was a nasty place, made up of four planets  There were no gas giants to act as 'scrubbers', so all the planets were subject to collisions from terrestrial bodies.  Two were balls of frozen methane, while one was a molten furnace reminiscent of Mercury.  The one that could support Human life was a cold, almost barren place.  There was a tough form of plant-life that grew in various forms.  Despite the barren landscape, it still possessed an awesome beauty......with mountain spires that rivaled Mt. Everest.

To this tiny little corner of the Universe had come the crew of USS Columbia......and her Orion adversaries.
