ON "You looked like you had something to say, Commander Svonn," Ronov said to the ship's science officer. "Initially, I did, Erei'Riov," Svonn answered evenly, turning from his console to the command area. "And what changed your mind?" Ronov knew what the answer would be. He just wondered how far the Fleeter officer would allow him to go without reminding him of Starfleet's attitude towards this whole matter with the Starzen would be. "Your order of the transmission to the Starzen command, Rekkhai." Svonn answered again. He studied the Romulan officer for a moment. "And if I hadn't ordered the transmission," Ronov baited. Svonn took a quick glance about the bridge. He noted all eyes were on him, and could literally feel the tension this conversation was creating. "I would have been compelled to rem..." "Erei'Riov," interupted Ensign Reever. "Admiral Detalya is hailing us, sir." Ronov smiled. "Saved by the bell, eh Svonn. Put it onscreen" Svonn merely raised an eyebrow. He was going to point out that he heard no bell, but the image on the forward screen turned fist to the image of the Starzen Conglomerate insignia, then to the sombre face of Admiral Detalya. "Erei'Riov," Detalya acknowledged. "We have received your communique. I am happy to report that the High Council has approved your exploration of the Elder Base. I will be departing shortly to rendezvous with you at the sector." "That is good news, Admiral," Ronov replied. "We expect to be there within five of our days." Admiral Detalya did a quick computation on his desk. He looked back up to the screen. He could be seen checking the figure, then rechecking it, as if it were incorrect. "Good. That will put us both there at approximately the same time. Has Captain Mergahn returned?" "Not as of yet," the Rihannsu officer replied. "I do expect she will be back by the time we get there." "Good. Good," Detalya said with a nod of his head. "I look forward to meeting her." "I am certain she is as eager to make your acquaintance, Admiral. Until then, we shall see you in four days." "Four days it is, Erei'Riov. Detalya out." The screen returned to the computer generated image of stars streaking past the ship as it traveled at warp 4. Ronov turned to the science officer. "And Mr. Svonn. Rest assured that I have my orders from my superiors, and those orders are to act as Mergahn's XO. I have sworn an oath to the Galae and to Captain Mergahn to act in the best interest of this joint mission." "I am most gratified to learn that, Erei'Riov," Svonn announced easily. "Why Commander," Ronov said playfully. "Was that a humorous response?" "A humorous response would be an emotional one, Erei'Riov, and I need not remind you of my heritage." Svonn turned back to the science console. He heard the light chuckles from around the bridge, and allowed the corners of his mout to turn up ever-so-slightly. OFF |
