The current state of things. PRESENTLY...
The Romulan Empire has been in a state of disarray for years, three major factions emerged after Shinzon's rebellion failed but they have just recently allied. The Romulans have begun to return to their pre-Shinzon state of government, a Senate and Praetor but the divisions of the previous factions are not entirely healed.
The relationship between the Federation and the Romulans has thawed over the years only as much as it had benefited one faction or another. They've accepted limited food aid but did not accept mediation by the Federation, for example. The Romulan people are still relatively suspicious of the Federation.
Nevertheless, there has been diplomatic progress. The Federation now has a full Ambassador on the planet. Ambassador Spock, is no longer in hiding as he continues his efforts to reunify Vulcan and Romulus. He continued presence on Romulus has previously provided the Federation vital information about the factions and power struggles there.
Meanwhile... In the Federation, our ships and stations have been advancing. Years have past since the events of Nemesis. The well-known Jean-Luc Picard has retired from Starfleet, along with the war hero Worf. Picard's latest role is as the Federation's Ambassador on Vulcan. Worf has become a General in Starfleet. The story of Lieutenant Commander Data's rebirth is nearly legendary, Geordi LaForge played a major role in helping to return Data to "health" using the Android device B4. LaForge meanwhile has left Starfleet and was last working on starship engineering outside of Starfleet.
This is the beginning setting.... I look forward to comments, questions, suggestions, problems, clarifications. Some of it isn't relevant.
For example, for my own story aboard the USS Excelsior, we are currently en route back to Earth aboard a "loaner" starship. Excelsior is in the shipyards being repaired. I'm positioning the crew to take advantage of the pending events to get our ship back early (hopefully).
In any case, what are the thoughts out there?
