It seemed he always came back to Chincoteague. It was the one place that kept him grounded. But this time, it wasn't as an escape. It was to plan where he went next. Things had progressed quite nicely in the past six months. Ross had won a landslide victory and was now the President of the United Federation of Planets......with Jack Archer now the C-in-C of Starfleet Command. Two strong voices in positions of power......who knew the score and were willing to do what needed to be done to save them all. After the scandal of the sliding project had become public, the Orions had decided it was too much of a hotbed at this time to pursue. Then, with some 'gentle' pressure from Starfleet, the hostages had been returned, including Maya and the children. Unfortunately, they'd all suffered some form of torture, and all had signs of wear. Still......they were alive. It was a start. A fresh start. Kat Dominie was recovering for her injuries in seclusion, along with little Jaime. No actions had been taken against her at this time, due to her condition. After, he'd found the Columbia, all her people had been given indefinite leaves to recover from their ordeals. The ship herself had been decommissioned along with the Moonbase for the time being while Ross and Archer studied the entire situation to decide where to go from here. Chances were the Moonbase would be reactivated in the near future as it was a central hub of intelligence from which to keep tabs on the T'Kil. That would be it's primary focus now. Admiral Mallory had been dishonourably discharged. Jim wasn't sorry to see him go. He'd been a major part of the deception against the Challenger crew when they'd been in his Universe. It wasn't known if he planned to leave or stay. Of Zira Dominie......there was no sign. The first thing Ross had done when sworn in was to pardon Jim of any wrong-doing. In addition, Archer had thrown away his letter of resignation and re-instated him to Starfleet, currently 'on-leave' for personal reasons. It had given him another weapon in the fight. His old rank, his connections, even a new post if he wanted. Patriot, once Jack Archer's ship, was assigned to him. Jim had mixed feelings about the ship he'd once served on as Second Officer. She was lovely......but she wasn't Challenger. But perhaps it was time to look beyond that. A ship is a ship......and he needed her. It was going to be hard to step back aboard though. After all that had happened, with the leak to the news agency about the sliding project, the threat of the T'Kil, the change in office for the Federation, all of it was so unsettling. There were those who still looked on him as a traitor......and maybe he was. But he looked on himself as someone willing to make a hard choice to save everything they knew and cared about. The T'Kil were here. It was only a matter of time before the worst became a reality. It made him chuckle. Perhaps Patriot was the right ship to give him. He thought of himself as a patriot to the cause of Humanity. The time had come to leave the rustic comforts of the cottage on Chincoteague. Above him somewhere, floated a ship that was both familiar and foreign to him. It was time. |
