Captain's Log Stardate 61289.1 (4/15/2384 1930 hours) I am at a crossroads with the mission of this ship. In order to discover more about this Ancient Advanced Civilization, I need to investigate planets that the powers that be in this area have cordoned off, under harsh penalties. One of my runabouts was almost distroyed because they did not know of the restrictions. I see two choices here. I could try to negotiate with the Starzen, to gain access to the planets. Or, I could sneak to those planets under cloak and dagger techniques. I know that my XO strongly favors the later. Starfleet policies demand the former. I know I was chosen for this mission because of my strong negotiating skills, and that Starfleet would prefer negotiations. However, this is not strictly a Starfleet ship anymore. It's part of a joint venture between Starfleet and the Empire. Starfleet regulations are a useful guideline, but they do not have to be strictly followed. Admiral Oren made that clear for me when we met and he described the mission. My first inclination would be to negotiate. However, I need to look at things from a logistical stand point. No matter what happens, or choices I make, we will visit those planets. This is a given. If I try to negotiate and fail, we will be forced to go about the cloak and dagger method. But, we will have the added risk that the Starzen will be watching for us more closely, and I doubt they would give us a second break. So, I guess the decision really comes down to: do I think I can successfully negotiate with the Starzen? If the answer is no, then I must side with my XO, and use our cloaked ships to investigate. I will have to do more research and talk to the Counselor to figure out that one question. My gut tells me that negotiations will fail. End Log Captain Jazmine Mergahn CO USS Athena |
