"A Little Insomnia" pt. 1
by: Celeste Ane

“A Little Insomnia”
Joint log: Dr Ian Resork and Dr Celeste Ane
(Occurs just after the events in Sim 260114)

Celeste spent the next few hours “keeping busy” in Sickbay. She switched to fruit juice instead of coffee as the medication kicked in and settled her stomach. The hypo Amelia made up for her was on her desk, awaiting the completion of her shift. She had already received notification from the bridge that they were heading back to Moonbase.
As the computer reminded her that her shift was coming to an end, Celeste requested Ian’s presence.

The ship's modified emergency medical hologram appeared in the office. "Good afternoon, Celeste," Dr. Resork greeted her warmly. "What can I do for you?"

“I’m leaving sickbay, and the ship’s crew in your very capable hands for at least the next 12 hours.” She said as she sat down behind her desk. “I’m taking myself off rotation til morning. I haven’t slept well the last 2 nights, and I am reporting that I will be taking a mild tranquilizer tonight, and will be unavailable unless I am needed in an extreme emergency. I’ve already logged it in my chart and in sickbay’s log. I just need you to sign off on it.” She handed him a padd with the medication authorization already pulled up for him.

Even thought he was just a hologram, Ian knew the PADD would register his touching of the screen. "Would you like me to check in on you at any point?" he asked as he handed the PADD back to her.

“Amelia ran a scan a couple hours ago. It’s filed as well. I should be ok with the amytipgaline. If not, I know where you are.” She smiled a little smile at him.
Celeste reached over to the computer on her desk and input a code. “I’ve given you access to the computer bio monitor in my quarters. You can check whenever you want”
Celeste just looked a bit weary. The caffeine was finally wearing off, and she was starting to feel it.

"Very good," the Resork EMH replied. "You go ahead and get some rest. I shall be here if you need me."

Celeste nodded at her friend as she got up from the desk, picked up the hypo and tucked it in her pocket, and then proceeded to her quarters.
In her quarters, Celeste had a quick meal of soup and half a sandwich and then tucking herself in, she gave herself the tranquilizer.
She laid there for some time trying to fall asleep, and while her body was tired, she couldn’t get her mind to shut down enough to fall asleep.
She tossed and turned for several hours before she gave up. Throwing a comfortable sweater over her 2 piece pajamas, she walked her way to sickbay. “Dr Resork” she called as she entered sickbay.

The EMH appeared from behind the curtain of a treatment area. "Yes, Dr. Ane?" he asked.

She looked even more exhausted now than she had several hours ago. “I told you I knew where to find you if I needed you.” She tried to joke, but it came out flat.

The EMH looked back into the treatment area. "I shall be straight back, Nurse," he said to the on-duty nurse. He looked back to Celeste. "Follow me, please."
Resork led her back a little further and directed her to climb on the bio-bed. He turned away from her for a moment.

Celeste followed him to the biobed and lay down, exhausted.

Ian came right back to her, with a PADD in his hand. He handed it to Celeste. "Here are some of my chronicles. Research dealing with sleep deprivation. And, most of the cases listed there have occurred on this ship."

She was shocked to hear this as she sat up on the biobed and started to peruse the padd. “Do you have a theory as to why?”

"Not yet," Resork answered. "I have not had a chance to do a full work up on you. I want you to go through each of the files, and tell me if any of them strike a familiar note. I shall be back in a moment."

She started to read through all the files, and the more she read, the more perplexed she became. She had started to think that her own problems were stemming from jumping universes, with the differing realities causing psychic confusion, but now she wasn’t sure there wasn’t a larger problem at hand. She yawned several times as she read.

After some time, Dr. Resork returned. "Well, Doctor," he asked, coming into the treatment area and looking at her bio-monitor. "What have we learned?"

She looked at him with bleary eyes. “This is an even bigger problem that I thought. I’m not sure what the hell is going on.” Celeste very rarely swore.
“Well, you better add my data to your project.” She replied as she lay back on the biobed.
Her mind now had another puzzle and was definitely not settling anytime soon. Gods, would she get any sleep?

"I can put you to sleep," Resork commented. "I would rather that didn't happen. So, tell me, what's been on your mind? We could do a complete neural scan."

“Go ahead. I’m at a loss as to what is going on. I thought it was just a psychic echo that kept bouncing back and forth not letting my brain settle. I’ve tried several herbal remedies that usually are helpful, soft music, white noise, even went so far as to try warm milk and nutmeg. And tonight now the tranquilizer.” She closed her eyes and sighed. “Right now, I’m ready for you just to sedate me, so at least my body gets some rest.”

"Alright," the EMH said. "Let's take a look, first." He moved just outside the treatment area, then pushed the large neural scanner into place by her bed. Ian placed the rectangular scanner inches above her forehead, and switched the device on. "This will just take a few minutes," he told her, even though he figured Celeste already knew.

Ian watched the monitor as the device scanned the other doctor's brain. He brought his hand to his chin as the data scrolled up the screen.

Celeste just lay quietly with her eyes closed while the scan came to completion. She hoped she would fall asleep, but no such luck for her.

"Well," Resork said, at last. "Nothing stands out and says, 'cut me out,' but we can do a deeper analysis of the scans." He removed his hypo-sprayer, and adjusted it. "I'll sedate you and let you get some sleep, for now, and look further into this once the computer has done a deep dive into the readings."
The EMH pressed the sprayer to Celeste's neck and pressed the trigger.

Before she could even nod at the plan, the sedative had taken effect and Celeste was fast asleep.
