X-Eagle "Saved?"
by: Lukas Fyrstk

"Saved?"
by Commodore Lukas Fyrstk

"The mixture is working," Luna Fyrstk reported as she watched the information on the emergency medical tricorder scroll by.  "Miss Livvey's vitals are stabilizing.  Hopefully we can find her some help, quickly."
"Ah think we're going to have trouble before we gat any help," Ronov told the other kids.  "They've spotted our landin' strip and are landing themselves!"
He was referring, of course to the Tregana frigate that had been scouring the planet's surface, looking for them.  They all exitd the shuttle in time to see the larger ship firing it's landing thrusters.
"Get all the kids into the shuttle," Ronov ordered.  "Roe!  Get th' forcefield up!"
Celeste, Luna and Vaurk worked to get the other children back inside the school shuttle.  Noble and Rohan went to the engineering section of the ship and powered the protective field that would surround the small vessel and hopefully hold off the alien intruders.
"Does anyone else feel really strange," Luna asked, looking to the other children.
"What do you mean 'strange,'" Celeste asked.  "Are you starting to feel ill?"
    "No, not ill, just..."
"A feeling of anger," Vaurk added solemly.  "I have noticed it too.  it is faint, but I feel it."
"Here they come," Ronov reported, from outside the shuttle.  "Fahve of them have just left the ship.  They're headed this way."
"You think the traps will work?" Noble asked.
"Provahdin' they want to maintain some cover as they approach the shuttle," Ronov answered.  He watched the figures of the aliens as they walked away from their ship.  To his relief, they did exactly that.
The approaching figures took to the left side (from the perspective the kids were watching) of the landing trail left by the shuttle.  They were no longer visible.  Ronov knew they would know in just a matter of minutes whether he and Noble had set good enough defensive traps or not.
"I can't see them!" Noble complained.  He remained close to the side of the shuttle, but stuck his head out, trying to see down the trail.
Suddenly, from the direction of the approaching aliens, they heard a satisfying "snap" of the branches.  Also heard was the swinging of the other, large branch they had set as the trap.  A metallic "thunk" was heard as the branch slammed into two of the approaching soldiers.  Their unconscious forms could actually be seen being tossed back by the large branch.
"Two down!" Noble exclaimed with joy.
"Yeah, but that's only two," Ronov complained.  "Ah'm bettin' the other will be more careful."
"Rohan came out of the shuttle to join his brother and cousin.  All three boys peered with caution, around the edge of the shuttle.  They saw the three remaining Tregana approach the shuttle.  Unexpectedly, they suddenly saw the flash of energy from the force field, and one of hte soldiers flew back.
"He walked right into it," Noble said with a giggle.  They all noted the attention of the other two soldiers was divereted away from them, and from their fallen comrade.  Even more surprising was the energy beams that lanced out and struck the solders, dropping them to the ground.
The three moved further toward the rear of the shuttle, and peered around the edge.  It took less than five seconds for them to figure out what they were seeing.
    "Starfleet!" Noble announced.
"Better 'n Starfleet," Ronov added, "It's the Eagle.  There's Lt. Moonshadows!"
"And Lt. Banning," Rohan chimed in.  Because the ship had once been under command of their father, both of the twins had practically the whole crew mainfest committed to memory.  They did not recognize the woman who now approached, but figured she was the XO, as she wore commander's pips, and everyone knew the executive officer would lead away missions.
"I'm Commander Jorel from the U.S.S. Eagle," the commander told them, rising fully from her place of cover so the boys could see her.
Ronov was about to order the force field shut down when he felt a strong sense of.... something.  He looked to his brother, who appeared just as baffled.  Clearly he felt it too.  Their attention was suddenly diverted by their older sister.
"Look!  Up there," Luna said, pointing skyward.  All eyes turned to the direction she was pointing.
At first, it resembled a very dark, almost black cloud.  As it got closer, they could make out individual forms.  There were five of them that arrived just ahead of the horde.  They landed just outside the perimeter of the force field.  They were covered in a dark brown fur, and had wings which folded up the moment they touched down.  They resembled large monkeys, standing approximately a meter and ahalf tall.  They bore no weapons, but anyone that was psi-sensitive could clearly tell that they were angry.
