Militaries throughout history have rewarded their soldiers with honors, and Starfleet is no exception. Awards, Medals, and Decorations serve to encourage excellence, and help to provide Starfleet personnel with a sense of their own worth and Starfleet's appreciation of them. This point should not be underestimated, since many individuals have to sacrifice a great deal in order to establish a career in Starfleet, and often are unable to have or maintain families, homes, or other "traditional" symbols of self-worth.

Federation Awards
Federation awards are presented to any Federation citizen or other person deemed deserving (including Starfleet personnel). Federation awards may thus be granted to ambassadors, civilian mission specialists, special NPCs, etc., as well as Starfleet officers and crew.
These decorations are worn on formal dress uniforms. If a medal is awarded more than once, it is decorated with a design of metal leaves, called a cluster.

Major
The Federation Order

The Federation Order is awarded for service in the field or before the enemy or for services to the Federation.
Members (M.F.O.) are part of a three-level hierarchy: member, companion, and officer of the Most Excellent Federation Order.

President's Medal
 
Awarded for superior combat and noncombat services and devotion to duty whilst in service of the Federation

Starfleet awards are restricted only to Starfleet personnel. These decorations are worn on formal dress uniforms. If a medal is awarded more than once, it is decorated with a design of metal leaves, called a cluster.

Major:
  Federation Star
 
The Federation Star is awarded to a person who, while a member of Starfleet, distinguishes himself conspicuously by bravery and valor at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against an enemy of the Federation; while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force. The deed performed must have been one of personal bravery or self-sacrifice so conspicuous as to clearly distinguish the individual above his comrades and must have involved risk of life. Incontestable proof of the performance of the service will be exacted.
This is a very rare honor, and is often given posthumously.

Golden Starburst
 
Awarded for extraordinary heroism, not justifying the award of a Federation Star, to any person who, while a member of Starfleet engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force against an enemy of the Federation. The act or acts of heroism must have been so notable and have involved risk of life so extraordinary as to set the individual apart from his or her comrades.

Starfleet Cross
 :
Awarded to Officers and Warrant Officers for an act or acts of valour, courage or devotion to duty in active operations against an enemy.

Legion of Merit

Awarded to Officers, WO's and non-commissioned member of Starfleet "who shall have distinguished themselves by exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services". The Legion of Merit may be awarded for combat or noncombat services. Justification of the award may accrue by virtue of exceptionally meritorious service in a succession of important positions.
This is the highest Starfleet award for noncombat services.

Distinguished Service Cross
 
Awarded to Starfleet and Marines Officers, Commanders or below, including Warrant Officers (or equivalent), for meritorious or distinguished services before the enemy

Starfleet Medal

Awarded to non-commissioned officers and men for an act or acts of exceptional valour, courage or devotion to duty, though not in active operations against the enemy.

Conspicuous Gallantry Medal
 
Awarded to Officers, WO's, and non-commissioned members of Starfleet and Starfleet Marines for acts of conspicuous gallantry whilst in active operations against the enemy.

Minor:

Valor Cross
 
The Valor Cross is awarded to a person who, while serving in any capacity with Starfleet, distinguishes himself by bravery and valor above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against an enemy of the Federation; while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force. The deed performed must have been so conspicuous as to clearly distinguish the individual above his comrades. The required self-sacrifice, while of a lesser degree than that required for the Starfleet Cross, must nevertheless have been performed with marked distinction.

Red Crest

Awarded to a member of Starfleet who has suffered major or permanent injuries while showing extraordinary courage in the fulfilling of his or her duties while defending the United Federation of Planets.

Nebula Star
 
Awarded to members of Starfleet who distinguished themselves by gallantry and intrepidity in action, but not of a nature to justify the award of the Valor Cross, while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force.

Starfleet Achievement Medal

Starfleet Commendation medal
 
Awarded to members of Starfleet who, while serving in any capacity with the Federation, shall have distinguished themselves by meritorious achievement and service. The degree of merit must be distinctive, though it need not be unique. Acts of courage which do not involve the voluntary risk of life may be considered for the Commendation award.

Meritorious Service Medal
 
Awarded to any member of Starfleet who distinguishes themselves by either outstanding achievement or meritorious noncombat service to the Federation.

Combat Readiness Medal
 
Awarded to Officers, WO's, and non-commissioned members of Starfleet and Starfleet Marines for demonstrated superior combat abilities whilst in active operations against the enemy.
