BACKGROUND:

PERSONAL HISTORY: Jim was born in Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada and has a love of winter activities such as skiing and snowmobiling. His father was an engineer on board the USS Essex, and his mother was a civilian Medical Technologist.
Jim had a troubling early existence, having parents from such diverse lifestyles. His mother was pushing him into a medical career, while his father wanted him to follow in his footsteps. When Jim was 16, his parents divorced. This led to the "wild" time in his life.
He left Earth to find adventure among the stars. What he found was trouble. Landing with a group of smugglers and thieves, he at first enjoyed a run of success as a criminal, looting a few rich private spaceliners. On one occasion though, things went horribly wrong. The liner they attacked was actually a cover for a covert operation for Federation Intelligence. The smuggler vessel, the Royale, was badly damaged, but still managed to escape. Jim wasn't so luckly, having been stunned by the Security personel aboard the disguised liner, the Empire Lady Sandy.
Realising that Jim was just a small fish in the operation, F.I. cut him a deal for his testimony. Part of the deal was serving time at a minimum-security rehab center on Pellius IV. It was here that his parents re-entered his life.
His father, using his influence, got him a posting as a crewman aboard the Starfleet cutter Helena Bonham Carter. His parents felt that this assignment would provide him with the discipline and direction he needed. It worked. He began the next phase of his life.

STARFLEET ACADEMY BACKGROUND:Now 23, he served as an enlisted man aboard the Carter for two years. From there, he transferred to NCC-2027, USS Tripoli where he served in Security and as a Field Medic. It was for outstanding service on an away mission to Borallius III that earned him a berth at the Academy. He took a disruptor bolt intended for the First Officer. This greatly impressed the C.O., Captain Ramsey. He sponsered him to Starfleet Academy.
Now a full-fledged Academy cadet, he suffed the usual rigors of academy life. He developed an interest in flying and racing antique autos. He also took a real interest in his physical development as well as his mental development. He began an ernest exercise and fitness program. He did a season with the precision flying team Nova Squad. Jim graduated from the Academy at age 30.

STARFLEET BACKGROUND:Upon his graduation, he joined the Starfleet Marine Corps. After he completed his training, he re-joined the regular fleet. He was posted to NCC-2138, USS Ranger in Security and as a Field Medic once again. It was at this time that he realized that both Federation and Starfleet Intelligence had been keeping him under a watchful eye.
He was recruited to work in Starfleet Intelligence under the command of Admiral Rick Styles aboard the USS Wyld Foxx, NCC-2222-A. On Stardate 49902.03, he received a promotion to Lieutenant (j.g.). He continued to serve with distinction, receiving promotions to full Lieutenant, and being assigned as Second Officer of the Wyld Foxx.
As this period was in the middle of the Federation's war with the Dominion, there was a great need for skilled officers throughout the 'Fleet. Jim was moved around a fair bit, first to the old "K" series space station K-56, a.k.a. "The Long Night" as Tactical Operations Officer, then to NCC-412282, USS Whiteknight as her Operations Officer at the rank of Lieutenant Commander. From here he was moved to NCC-2358, USS Majesty, where he was promoted to full Commander and assigned as Executive Officer under his old friend, Captain Anton Popov.
With the destruction of the Majesty during an attack on a Dominion ship-building facility, Jim moved with Captain Popov to his new command, NCC-61984, USS Bismarck. From here, Jim moved to NCC-84777, USS Patriot, where he took a temporary grade reduction to Lieutenant Commander to serve as Operations Officer and Second Officer under Captain Kaylan Zen. This Tour of Duty involved a trip through an unstable Wormhole, with the ship and crew being trapped in an Alternate Universe's version of the Delta Quadrant.
It was also during this tour that he was involved in a covert operation for Starfleet Intelligence in an attempt to apprehend a group of Slavers, teaming up with an old friend, Captain Jessica Knight, formerly the Chief Medical Officer of the USS Wyld Foxx, now the Commanding Officer of the USS Whiteknight. Upon Admiral Styles' appointment as Commandant of Starfleet Academy, the USS Wyld Foxx was given to his X.O., Captain April Styles. Jim returned to the ship, once again a full Commander, and now assigned as her X.O.. After the death of Captain Kairnen McCloud during the Chameleon incident, Jim made a decision to leave the Wyld Foxx and Starfleet, despite having recently been promoted to Captain. Jim had requested a temporary grade reduction to Commander so as to continue to serve aboard the 'Foxx. After much thought, Jim decided not to leave Starfleet, and instead accepted the position of Commanding Officer of the Excelsior-class starship USS Challenger, NCC-1986. The ship had just recently finished undergoing an eighteen-month re-fit. Now, fully re-built and re-furbished, she was ready to fly again. Jim met the ship at Starbase 74, having left the 'Foxx aboard the Starfleet courier ship USS Messenger along with Lieutenant Kat Dominie, the Admiral's daughter-in-law, who was having some personal troubles of her own over Captain McCloud's death. Jim and Kat parted ways, with Kat returning to her homeworld, and Jim to the Challenger, taking her back to the stars. Two years into his first tour of duty aboard the Challenger, Jim was approached by Admiral Quentin Mallory of Stafleet Research. Admiral Mallory was interested in using Jim's ship as the test vehicle for his controversial "Sliding Technology". After much study and thought, Jim accepted the assignment, and so began a new adventure.

MEDICAL HISTORY:

For the most part, Jim has enjoyed excellent health throughout his life. Other than the occasional childhood illness, his early years were uneventful. As an adult however, he has suffered a few setbacks.

PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE:

For the most part, Jim Hunter has proven a stable and well-adjusted individual. However, there was one occasion where his Mental Health was put into question.
The incident was during NCC-84777, USS Patriot's extended visit to an Alternate Universe. The unique fabric of space in that Universe had an unusual effect on then Lieutenant Commander Hunter. The Chief Medical Officer diagnosed that the Neural injuries suffered by Jim Hunter while at the Academy had left him vulnerable to the effects of that space.
As a method of helping her Acting X.O., Captain Kaylan Zen implanted one of her Trill personalities into Lieutenant Commander Hunter, with the hopes of helping him to stabilize the ever increasing erratic nature of his own personality. It had a most unusual outcome, in effect creating a split-personality within Mr. Hunter, with the Trill Personality in dominant control while awake, and the erratic personality of Jim Hunter lying in wait for those periods of sleep. The final outcome was favourable, as the effects of that region of space we negated, and Commander Hunter was restored to his usual self, with no lasting ill-effects.
